He is saying in verse twenty-three, stop drinking only water. Why? Because of your stomach and your frequent illness. That”s medical advice. That then means wine can be medicine. But remember Medicine is only taken in small quantities. You can only take it little by little.

I think what I hear him saying is, be careful about your physical health. We have been talking about your spiritual walk, talking about your need to worship, your need to do things that will help the church to grow, and how to grow as a holy church. That”s okay. But if you are going to be a good pastor, your health matters. You must look after your body, because although God”s message is in your heart, your heart is on your body.

If your body is sick, that day you cannot go to church even if you are its pastor. You still have the message but you will be in a hospital bed. So, he is saying it is important you take your spiritual life seriously, but it is also important you take your physical health seriously as a Christian leader. Do exercise, eat the right thing in the right time, and simply be somebody who is conscious about his physical health.

Does that mean you don”t want to die and go to heaven? No. the timing of going to heaven must not be determined by your carelessness. That is suicide. You must think like Paul. If for me to live is Christ, then I want to live. I am a servant of Christ on earth. But if God wants me to die, that will be my gain. It means, since you are living for Christ, you must take the health of your life, of your body, very, very seriously. This is because it is in taking your health seriously that you are going to be honour to God. I think that would be important to us all not just the pastor .

Day 2

3 John 1:2

Dear friend, I pray that you may enjoy good health and that all may go well with you, even as your soul is getting along well.

So, what are we saying? That health matters. And that we should take it seriously, including yourself as a leader or as a pastor, which Timothy was.

But I know this verse twenty-three has been quoted by non-Christians heavily. But the bible says use a little wine for your stomach”s sake. You know, then and even likely today in the rural areas, water is also used like a medicine. But unfortunately, most of that water in some rural area is actually not pure. There are people up stream who are bathing and downstream there are people taking the water for their drinking and cooking.

So, when you go home and take unboiled water, it may not be totally pure. And maybe that”s why Timothy had some stomach problems. it is not necessarily pure water that he was taking. So, you need to work on that water if that is where you live. But these days they do purification of water in many places.

But what happens with wine? Fermenting it kills all the germs. The harmful things are dead by the time the wine is actually wine. In that society, wine was available as a social drink. But note that it seems like when you became a Christian you stopped taking even a little. No wonder Timothy has to asked to take it as medicine. If he was taking alcohol even as a social drink there would have been no reason to be told.

The only thing he was reminded is that you are a Christian and so you can only take a little wine as a medicine because you don”t trust the water. Timothy was probably abstaining from alcohol for him to be told that.

It means that even the Christians of the New Testament, as soon as they became Christians, they are likely to have stopped alcohol. So, Paul is having to appeal to him to take alcohol which can only mean that he was not taking any. And because that culture took wine socially, it can only mean that when he became a Christian, Timothy stopped taking alcohol.

Isn”t that wonderful to know that people did not encourage born again people to take any alcohol at all in a society that took alcohol, except like in this case of Timothy, who is sick. He is being asked to take a little’€¦.because the abstinence, or keeping away from wine, was allowing the germs or whatever was in his stomach to grow. And therefore, he was getting sicker.

So, Paul is saying it is not wise to sacrifice your health although it is true it is bad to drink alcohol. But taking a little will help your health. That way you are able to preach.

It would do better to God”s work when you are physically healthy and God”s kingdom will grow when you put all your energy into it rather than dealing with your sickness. Somebody called Barkley argues that, Paul is simply saying that there is no good in ascetism which does the body more harm than good. In other words, you need to be very careful when you do things that hurt your body in order to please God. Which is what Barkley is calling ascetism. It is not right. Look after your health.

Day 3

Proverb 3

7 Do not be wise in your own eyes;
fear the Lord and shun evil.8 This will bring health to your body
and nourishment to your bones.

That does not mean you do not fast. But don”t fast to harm your body. Paul seems to be telling us that”s not the direction to go. Don”t abstain from food or things that people are taking, for too long or to a very far extent to harm your health. That would not be something good to be involved in.

So, be disciplined. Be self-controlled. But don”t be so self-controlled that you harm your health. Cults do that. The church of Christ that studies the scriptures we are studying does not go to that level. You know this guy called Timothy, his medical issues, the bible seems to be saying, are frequent. In other words, he was a sickly guy. And yet he was a bishop looking after many congregations. That”s why Paul seems to be saying, I know God heals but also take medicine. remember Paul praying for people who were sick and they got well. Many miracles happened in Paul”s case. So, he must have told Timothy that God heals. He must have also prayed for him. But he is saying yes God heals but also God uses medicine to heal.

So maybe God healed him once, when he got sick. God healed him again, but still he got sick again. Paul is saying, God heals yes, but he also has given us medicine so he can heal you either using medicine or miraculously. My advice is, take the medicine. It is what Paul seems to be saying. And of course, he was using his apostolic authority given that he was the leader and mentor of Timothy to give him good advice.

In Acts 19:11-12 ,we are actually told that there are people who would take the handkerchief of Paul to the sick and on that basis they would actually get well. Why would Paul in this letter not attach a handkerchief which he has prayed for so that his pastor friend Timothy can get well?

I think this shows that Paul did not always depend on interventions of miracles and that at no time did Paul believe that miracles happen on demand. It is God who determines if and when miracles can happen. So, these super Pentecostals who think you cannot take any medicine are unbiblical. To believe that if you are truly a Christian you just call and things happen, is super faith. Paul does not seem to be like that. True he has seen God healing, true he has seen God”s miracles, but he also knows God also uses doctors, and medicine. There is no such a thing as expecting there will be miracles at every instance. Obviously, even today there are miracles, but they happen at God”s timing. And in this instant, Timothy had not been healed. I hope you get the principle here. That you believe in healing, but that healing can happen with medicine or miraculously.

Let”s always remember that God heals. Let us remember that God heals up to now. There are people who say miracles ceased. Nowhere in the scriptures are we told that they would cease before heaven. We need them now maybe more than they needed them then. So even today he still heals miraculously. But it is the Holy Spirit who will determine when. And it is important to understand just like the days of Timothy, we also must avail ourselves of medicine. We should look for the medicine whether it is a natural medicine or something from the doctors to deal with that. But in the process God may also allow divine healing. So, God may use natural remedies, modern medicine, or do miracles. All of that is available for God to use and you need to be open to them. Medicine and healing by miracles do not contradict each other. Both of them are actually important.

So, in Kenya where a cult killed many, many people by teaching them the wrong things not long ago, this is a message you want to emphasise. That when you hear somebody say that it is a sin to take medicine, you know they are cultic. They are not true biblical believers. Biblical believers understand what Paul is saying, that there is absolutely nothing wrong with God healing with medicine or healing by miracle but the choice is not ours. The choice belongs to God.

So, having a medical insurance cover, is a good idea for a Christian. Because God can heal through medicine or heal miraculously. If he doesn”t want you to use your medical cover, he will give you divine health and you will not get sick. But you can”t ignore using a medical cover because God heals, why? He heals at his choice. This is unlike what those people you hear saying, command your morning are saying.

They are not biblical. We are at God”s mercy. The good thing is that he has promised to walk with us. To heal us. And he will be with us through the challenges of life that come our way.

Day 4

Psalm 44:21

would not God have discovered it, since he knows the secrets of the heart?

Paul then shows us how undeserving we can be. You know, in 1 Tim 5 :24- says, there are members of the church who need our help to walk right although they have God.

24 The sins of some are obvious, reaching the place of judgment ahead of them; the sins of others trail behind them. 25 In the same way, good deeds are obvious, and even those that are not obvious cannot remain hidden forever

But it”s by God”s mercy not that we deserve help. Men”s sins are clearly evident. In fact, you don”t have to look for them. You can see them before even you have to judge. But you know, those of some men, you wouldn”t know they are in sin as you are fellowshipping with them. You see the results later.

Likewise, Paul says, the good works of some are clearly evident and those of others cannot be hidden. So, what we are saying is, as a pastor, as a leader, be aware of how limited you are because some things will not come obviously. Always remember wheat and tares grow together until harvest time. It is true of all churches have tares. If you find a perfect church please do them a favor and not join that church? You are not perfect and so once you join them the church will no longer perfect.

You may think all are perfect because there is no evidence of sin. Paul says with some believers the sin can only appear with time. That”s why you need to seek God”s help to give you the gift of knowledge and discernment if you are going to lead people because they are not obvious. Their sinfulness is not on their face. Of course, for some you can tell from far this guy is not somebody you can trust. Let him stay a little longer before you can lay your hand on them or accept to do ministry with you. It is easy to see the troubles of some people as young believers. But for others they seem to be okay and you may think that they have grown as Christians so quickly but it might be because their sins are hidden.

Day 5

Psalm 90:8

You have set our iniquities before you, our secret sins in the light of your presence

All of us are the same. We have areas of our lives that are hidden to the public. Only God can deal with them because he knows them. So, for God all are clear. For us as human beings, nothing has changed since the days of Samuel going to Jesse”s family to ordain a king. And the first one comes, Samuel feels this is a good one. God says no, not that one. Another one, yeah this must be the one. He is not the one. Finally, a small boy who cannot qualify to be a king comes. And God tells him, this is the one. You anoint him. How When Jesse has such good-looking men who are capable. God”s answer was, man looks at the outside, but God looks at the inside. And nothing has changed ever since. You are impressed by somebody”s talk, somebody”s dressing, somebody”s behaviour, as long as we have not seen any obvious sin, we are likely to lay our hands on them and give them leadership. They may be sinful but you can”t see it because their sin is not evident. So, you might see some people as very, very Holy, but in the meanwhile they”re covering up some hidden sin.

So, which category is yours? Are you having a hidden sin or an obvious sin? Both sins are condemned. However, there is a third thing Paul says. At the beginning, some are obviously sinful, some are obviously Holy, but thirdly some of the Holy ones later are proved to have been unholy. But one thing you are assured, sin cannot be finally hidden. Give it time.

And I think he is trying to explain what he said earlier; do not be hasty in laying your hands on someone. Give it time and the sin will not be hidden. You know, good works will finally be revealed and even sins that are covered will finally be revealed. No wonder somebody came up and said, the days of a thief are forty. I don”t know where they got the forty from, but that means your fortieth day will come and however much you have been trying to cover up, the truth will be known. The Lord will expose you.

Day 6

Revelation 14:15

Then another angel came out of the temple and called in a loud voice to him who was sitting on the cloud, ‘”Take your sickle and reap, because the time to reap has come, for the harvest of the earth is ripe.'”

I think Timothy is actually being cautioned on his leadership styles and how he appoints leaders. Not to appoint somebody on the basis what we call in psychology, hallo effect. What is hallo effect? You meet somebody, you are happy with them ,you are convinced this is the right person but later you realize how wrong you were. That”s one of the weaknesses of us leaders. Sometimes the problem is another one, stereotyping. If he is the son of so and so, he must be good. Isn”t he the guy who has a PhD? He must be good. That”s stereotyping. Paul is warning, no. People are complex. And sometimes what you see on the outside may not be an accurate picture of what is happening on the inside. So, take it slowly. Give him time and God will be able to expose him, so that you know who you are appointing well before you appoint them. I think that will be something that we have to think about ourselves.

So, verse twenty-four is saying, the sins of some are obvious. Is that you? Are your sins obvious? You know, nobody wants their sins to be obvious but that is the greatest advantage you have. When your sins are obvious that means the pastor can help you earlier. If your sins are not obvious, in other words, you are able to cover up ,you risk eternity. By the time somebody comes to help you, the sin may have totally ruined your character, your nature, even sometimes your health. So, it is not a bad thing for your sins to be obvious. If there are obvious, they reach the place of judgement ahead of you. It is like you wonder to the pastor, haiya, how did you know? The pastor already knows because they are obvious. So that is, I think, the better place to be preferred.

But others seem good. But you know something, over time the trail of sin will follow them. And pastor says haiya, I thought I trusted you? Yeah it is now coming out.

Day 7

1 Timothy 5

25 In the same way, good deeds are obvious, and even those that are not obvious cannot remain hidden forever.

So, get warned. You may lie to your pastor now, you may lie to your wife now, you may lie to your children now, you may lie to your husband now, it is not obvious but somehow you will get into an embarrassing position when the Lord allows you to be exposed. So, a leader, it seems, has to take responsibility for his spiritual righteousness but he also must take responsibility for the spiritual lives of all the people that are put under him as a pastor.

Number two, he must begin with taking care of himself but number two he must seek God”s help to discern about the people around them. And ensure that, since you know how complex people are, you do not appoint people in a hurry. One translation is calling it hastily. Let me call it, in a hurry. You need to ask yourself, how do I know this one. Do you understand, as a leader, that responsibility is heavy?

But we are not just talking about pastors. What about your children? The child who knows how to hide their sins. So, you keep punishing the other one and not this one. And I”m not saying you keep punishing those that have not yet sinned. Be aware that your children, especially when they become teenagers and beyond, are complex. So, don”t be quick to decide. Give them time. Watch them. Discuss with them. Befriend them so that you can know them well. That way you are likely to help pass skills that can help them later in life.

And I think that has to be something you have to ask yourself as a parent. Is that what you do? So, as a parent, the rule same applies. You may be a pastor; the same rule applies. But I think even in the commerce; in your market place, if you don”t take these principles, you will end up destroying your business. Because you are going to employ people into very sensitive dockets and trust them then they clean you up. You say, huuh, but I trusted him? Maybe you are too quick to trust. You did not give him enough time for the sin or their real self to actually be exposed which is really what I hear Paul telling us to do as leaders to do. Give them time. Don”t be in a hurry. Don”t lay your hands or appoint someone in haste.

Day 1 1 Timothy 5 23 Stop drinking only water, and use a little wine because of your stomach and your frequent illnesses In 1 Timothy 5:23 Paul finally becomes a health advisor; a medical person, which is interesting.
