Lead by Example

Day 1
1Timothy 4
8 For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all Things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.

We have seen that the Book of 1st Timothy chapter 4 is emphasizing for us keeping to the truth. We are noting that in the last days, which I believe is our days, people will backslide or move away from the faith.
That’s why we are being told to spend time in godliness. You achieve this by training yourself in godliness which is a prerequisite to growing in the Lord.

The bible has told us in verse 8,
8 For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come

When you take time to have spiritual disciplines and stick fully to the spiritual disciplines, then you have the promise of a better life here and now. But also you have hope for the life after death.

We need to have, at the back of our mind, even as we live for our lives that there is life to come. That when you become a Christian, and practice godliness, you get a value that is , holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.
That’s what verse 8 is emphasizing. the big question you need to ask yourself is whether you can be said to be somebody who takes seriously spiritual disciplines. Or you are too busy with your family responsibilities, or too busy with your professional pursuits, you cannot afford time to have, for example ,your quiet time, or you cannot have time to retreat to a place of prayer and study of God’s word. Then you are not really having this required Godly exercise!
You may still be involved in physical exercise. Some people can’t afford time for prayer but they will still go to the gym. There is nothing wrong with going to the gym but not at the expense of spiritual exercise.

Verse 8 is saying
For physical training is of some value,

He is here recommending going to the gym, but he is saying if you can afford time for the gym, you should have afforded time for spiritual disciplines. This because physical exercise will benefit you only for this life, while spiritual exercise will benefit you for this life and the life to come.

In fact verse 9 says
9 This is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance.

Putting time to Spiritual disciplines is not something you should be debating on. You should not be asking do I or do I not follow spiritual disciplines? I think it will be something you cannot afford to be careless about when you are being told it’s a profitable thing. It’s also a statement that should be accepted, to use verse 9 language, for it deserves full acceptance.

Verse 10 says,
10 That is why we labor and strive, because we have put our hope in the living God, who is the Savior of all people, and especially of those who believe.

What does that mean? In this godliness exercise we are talking about, it will involve hard labour. It is not something that will come easy. It will involve much labour. This is why we labour and strive in spiritual disciplines.

Day 2
1 Timothy 4
10 That is why we labor and strive, because we have put our hope in the living God, who is the Savior of all people, and especially of those who believe

Becoming a Christian doesn’t mean you do not strive. It means you enjoy your strive, because you know while you are striving, you see the benefits of your striving.

Thus Christianity doesn’t mean after you are born again everything is nyweeee! the devil will be on your case! And he will attack you right left-centre, but with the help of God you fight him and defeat him as par Ephesians chapter 4:5. It will be very important to understand this fight. This spiritual warfare is for real! That’s why the word of God is calling it striving. You are going to strive but sure of victory.. that’s why we labour and strive happily.

So think about your spiritual life. In which way do you labour and strive as a Christian? let me think of three possibilities .
Number one, it is in studying God’s word, as commanded! You are meditate on this law day and night. It means you have to sacrifice and get time. In your busy schedule you must create time, and sometimes you may be creating time and thus taking risks of losing that contract. Or taking risk of losing that promotion in order to give your spiritual concerns time.
So when you are told about striving it may refer to forcing yourself to get time to pray and study God’s word. That will be a strife! You see the eternal benefits and so you better lose the earthly ones and that is the reason why you labour and strive. You need to ask yourself, are you putting any time ,in your busy schedule, for prayer and study of God’s word?

But I think the other possibility is that you taking time for spiritual ministry. Here you take time in seeking out the good of others. Obviously, professionally you are already doing good because whatever service you do in your career you are being faithful. You are doing it for men and therefore you are doing good and that also is in the service of the Lord.
But beyond that, we are all called to be witnesses. That’s the message of the great commission. That’s the message of Acts Chapter 1:8,

Wait in Jerusalem when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, you shall be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in Judea, in other words, you will be God’s witnesses in your family, but also in your professional area. This at times may need you to either relocate to go to work where you may continue in this ministry as God will guide you. That is striving as you move from your comfort zone to where you are needed just so that you reach the lost.

So if we say you are laboring and striving, what time do you put to witnessing each week? Time for your own spiritual growth is crucial , but seeking to win people to the Lord and to help them to grow in the things of God, and in their spiritual endeavors also needs your time.

We call that ministry. You do it, not because you want to earn any money. You are only earning money professionally. You do it because you want people to belong to God, and to enjoy all the benefits of walking with Him.
So the big question is, do you really allocate time all the days of your life, not just after you retire? It doesn’t matter how old or how young you are, as long as you are a Christian, you will still be called to be Christ witness.

And that doesn’t mean just by doing good arguing, ‘”they shall see I am a Christian by the way I live!'” No! The scriptures require you to verbalize the witness. Take initiative, like Dr Bill Bright of campus crusade said.Yes ,
‘”witnessing is taking initiative to share the Lord Jesus Christ in the power of the Holy spirit and leaving the results to God.'”
This is serious labour and striving as you are going to witness.

Thirdly, when we talk about striving, it means living by a different standard from the world. It will be a tough thing ..starving.this is because the people you work with have certain values which you don’t want. You don’t stick with those kind of values. They will see you as strange. They will make fun of you. They will even try to ostracize you. They will prevent your professional upward mobility. Your promotion will be interfered with. If you stick with biblical values’…. it will be a strife. The devil will tempt you many times to compromise so that at least you can have upward mobility. Sometimes you even argue ‘”if I am promoted I will do more for the Lord'” .But the Lord does not want anybody to do anything for him by breaking his law.If you are not obedient to him’… you are not in his service and it’s a real strive to walk in righteousness in a world full of evil, in a world that does not think righteousness is of any value at all.

Day 3
1 Timothy 4
8 For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.

So when the word of God is saying physical exercise has value or is useful but not as useful as spiritual value, godly exercise;it wants you to put time into it.This is because godly exercise will benefit you in this life, and also benefit you in the life to come. It needs you to labour and strive, meaning you force your way to spiritual growth .You then do not use time like others or don’t do things the way other people do it.

You may be running a business, and while other people are cutting corners, you must do it at the right way whatever the cost is to you. And that way your business may even collapse, but you are willing for your business to collapse than to compromise in any way. That is really striving. You labour and strive.

The bible is telling us that we envisage that is why we labour and strive. We have put our hope in the living God. In other words, this laboring and striving, is only possible if you set your eyes on Jesus, the beginner and finisher of your faith. Otherwise you will find it very difficult! But As long as you keep remembering ‘”hey! It is for Jesus, who is able to help me in whatever situation. I am no match for my opponent, but they are no match at all for Christ themselves. We have put our hope in the living God. That’s why we are able to labor and strive.

But if your hope is in a boss, your hope is in shareholders, your hope is in the board of directors, your hope is in the bishop, somewhere along the way you will have to compromise so as to please them. But you can only labor and strive if you have put your hope in the living God, because it is him you you would be seeking to please.

This living God, the bible tells us he is the savior of all people, not some people, not some races, not some tribes. It doesn’t matter what your background is, you rest assured that once you make a commitment to follow God, once you make the living God your hope, then please understand he accepts you. This is because he is the savior of all people.

However, although he is the savior of all people, those who don’t accept his salvation don’t benefit from his free grace! That’s why he is saying, it is especially for those who believe. Yet he died for all, he came to save all, but he doesn’t force himself to you. You have to make a commitment freely to follow his way .It will be something that is important for all of us think about.

So, physical training is useful! Is something of value in this life, but real benefit and value come out of godliness or spiritual exercise . It will be something that will be useful for you and anybody else in this life and eternity. I think that is something that you need to ask yourself whether you really are involved in spiritual exercise. My prayer is that God in his own way will help you to realize the value there is in trusting God and walking with him despite the strive. That way the temptation for a quick gain here or there will no longer be felt because you realize what is in offer is far much more.

I still remember a Christian chief inspector of police, saying, once she got saved she is no longer tempted with bribery, why? ‘”I cannot accept kitu kidogo( a small Gift) when Christ has given me kitu kikubw(big gift)'”. In other words, what the Lord has given me is big’… something big! So I am no longer tempted by small bribes because their value compared to what Christ is offering, is very, very little. Is not worth much in comparison.

Day 4
1 Timothy 4
Command and teach these things.

In other words, if you really want a church that is pure, that’s not going to backslide, you need to teach these hard things. They have to know the whole gospel. Having taught them, you must be clear you also don’t live your life your own way.Live as commanded. command and teach these things.

We are getting in church where people are allowed to be themselves rather comanded to stick to godly standards. Somebody divorces his wife and pick another one, and continues as a pastor! Continues as the elder! Continues as the deacon! What is the church’s argument: ‘”but you know you have to understand their marriage was having such difficulties!'”. To them the word of God becomes just a suggestion.

In fact they have changed the Ten Commandments from being called The Ten Commandments, they are called the ten suggestions. So you can do them only when possible. you can do them if things are okay.
My friend, Timothy is being told, biblical requirements are not suggestions, you cannot call yourself a Christian and have the freedom to live your life different from what the word of God is saying. So Timothy is being told, let your congregation know that these are not suggestions, they are requirements of Christ. The only way you don’t live by them is if you have chosen to be lost, chosen the way to hell. If you choose to go to heaven, then the things God is teaching are not suggestions. They are actually commandments that you need to live by.

In additional he is saying,
12 Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity.

For people to hear you as somebody discipling them, Paul keeps repeating, he wants Timothy to know, you must yourself as a leader be setting the example. I think that would be important for all church leaders. That don’t tell people to do things you yourself are not doing. it will not be very, very useful. So, be an example!

According to chapter 4 verse 12,the example will be in several areas.
Number one, in word. What does that mean? That you your self know God’s word, and that you live your life to uphold it. The knowledge of God’s word is critical. You must be an example in this. People must know how much you value God’s word by the way you talk, the way you quote it, the way you obey it. Yes,set an example in word means people must know your value of God’s word. They must know that in your preaching and philosophy of life you are a prisoner of God’s word. You can’t do what you think, you can’t do what you feel is good for you, but you do what the bible requires. That way then we can say you are setting an example in word.

Day 5
2 Corinthians 6:3
3 We put no stumbling block in anyone’s path, so that our ministry will not be discredited.

Timothy is also being told, set an example in conduct. Don’t tell people,’ do what I say and not what I do’. Your conduct, the way you do things, must be honoring to God. Conduct has to do with the way you live your family and professional life, the way you do your professional work. Conduct has to do with, the way you relate with your spouse. Conduct has to do with, the way you relate with your children, the way you relate with your parents. Conduct has to do also with the way you relate with the government of the day. Conduct has to do with, the way you relate in church, and how you work for the Lord.

All that is part of conduct. You should live your life with the consciousness the world is watching you. There is a song we used to sing in high school,

Though the world has forsaken God
Treads a different path, lives a different way
I walk the road that my savior trod,
And all may know I live under Jesus’ way
They are watching you, marking all you do,
Hearing the things that you say
Let them see the savior as he shines in you
Let his power control you everyday
2
Men will look at the life I lead
See the side I take, and the things I love
Then judge my lord by my every deed-
Lord, set my affections on things above
3
When assailed in temptation’s hour,
By besetting sins, by the fear of man,
Then I can know Jesus’ mighty power;
And become like him in his perfect plan.
4
Here on earth people walk in night
With no lamp to guide, they are dead in sin
I know the lord who can give them light,
I live, yet not I, but Christ within.
https://alkitab.app/AYM/60
Yes we are all watching you, marking all you do, hearing the things that you say. Let us see the savior shine in you. Let us see his power control you every day. That’s what setting an example in conduct is all about. Living your life in such a way that you don’t mind people seeing what you are saying and doing accidentally .
Somebody has said that the best way to checking your conduct is to imagine there is a journalist recording you secretly , and then he is going to make it the 9 o’clock news for the day. Would you be embarrassed? If the answer is yes, why are you doing or saying it?That is not good conduct. If it is good conduct it doesn’t matter whether somebody has secretly taped and then they go showing it to the public in the national TV station. That is setting an example in conduct.

Day 6
1 Corinthians 10:28-33
28 But if someone says to you, ‘”This has been offered in sacrifice,'” then do not eat it, both for the sake of the one who told you and for the sake of conscience. 29 I am referring to the other person’s conscience, not yours. For why is my freedom being judged by another’s conscience? 30 If I take part in the meal with thankfulness, why am I denounced because of something I thank God for? 31 So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God. 32 Do not cause anyone to stumble, whether Jews, Greeks or the church of God’€” 33 even as I try to please everyone in every way. For I am not seeking my own good but the good of many, so that they may be saved.

Then you must set an example in love.and that’s a real test, because some people are not easily lovable. The love the bible talks about is not out usual one but somebody told me the best word used for it is agape. A love that does require reciprocation. It is not scratch my back and I will scratch your back. It is I will scratch your back wherever the itch is, you don’t have to scratch me in return. If you choose to scratch it is okay, but I am not scratching you so that you scratch me. That is what Christian love is all about and especially loving when people are rude to you,or people don’t appreciate all your sacrifice. To love them is tough. It becomes very difficult.

But Timothy is being told, it is not enough just preaching God’s word with your mouth as verse 11 has said. You need verse 12 which is saying, you preach God’s word by setting an example! In love.
So, are there some people who are not lovable to you in your church ? people are watching to see what you will do with them! How will you relate with them. That does not mean you cannot discipline people. It doesn’t mean you cannot punish wrong doers. But it just means even as you do it, it will be clear to all and sundry that you love the person. You are not punishing them to destroy them, you are punishing them for them to become better. You are giving love but tough love.Yes, you must set an example in love.

But of course the biggest area you are love tested you are tested is in your family. Loving a child who is always wayward, loving a child who is not doing well in school, loving a child who has gone the wrong direction. People are watching to see what will you do with them. Do you really love them?

May be the hardest test of love is when you yourself are in pain. People in pain tend to be very self centred and selfish, and they expect the whole world to stop what they are doing and keep good attention to them. That is not love others but loving your self. Very different from Epaphroditus in Philippians who, we are told, he was very unhappy! Why? Because his church had heard that he was sick. He did not want them to get involved. So, the fact that they now knew that he was sick, and therefore it would trouble them, made him very, very uncomfortable. That is love for others even when you yourself is in pain.
That shows an example of love to your church. But, when you want everybody to be in pain because you are in pain, to stop what they are doing because you have a problem, that’s not a sign of love. I think that’s something you will have to ask yourself, are you really showing love to others , when you yourself are in pain? Can you set a good example in love?
So, that’s one of the tests, whether you will be in love when you are in pain, when you are in problems yourself, can you still help others? Or you feel, ‘”no, no, no! now I have a problem, I don’t care about others ! How can I help others and I am having problems myself?'” If you love them, they will not need to love you or do anything for you. You just want good for them. You are happy for them that they are not sick. You know you love someone when you feel uncomfortable if they are not doing well. You know you love someone when you do not desire anything from them, you just want their good for their own sake, not for you. Dealing with them for their own sake is love.Of course if they love you they will want to help even as you will be refusing to disturb them.

Lust is not love .Lust, is when you want to use a girl for your own sexual appetite or sexual pressure and pleasure. My friend! That is not love, that is lust. Love is, you don’t want to use the girl, you just want good for her. That is love.
So, the bible is saying, if you really want to be a good preacher, set the example in true love. Of course one big test is whether you love the Lord. I hope he doesn’t test your love like the one he gave his friend Abraham. Where he gives him only one child and then he says, that one child, sacrifice him! So if you are going to show an example in love, for example love of God, then you will be willing to sacrifice in every way so that you can honor God whom you love.

Day 7
Romans 2:21-24
21 you, then, who teach others, do you not teach yourself? You who preach against stealing, do you steal? 22 You who say that people should not commit adultery, do you commit adultery? You who abhor idols, do you rob temples? 23 You who boast in the law, do you dishonor God by breaking the law? 24 As it is written: ‘”God’s name is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you.'”[a]

Paul is also saying that you should set an example in spirit. In my thinking this is if you are going to set an example in spirit, three things will follow.
You walk in the spirit, that means for you, you value the spiritual more than the physical. number two, if you are walking in spirit, you walk in obedience to him, you listen to his voice, you study God’s word yes. But you will also be in prayer seeking to hear what the spirit is saying to you, and what does he want you to do.
What’s the application of that percentage of scripture you have read on how you are going to live your life today? That will be something that you have to decide on.

But thirdly, if you are really living by the Spirit, you will be in prayer all the time, seeking the mind of God.
But that’s not the only thing,Paul goes on to say, you must set an example in faith. And my understanding of that faith, is that you live a life where clearly you don’t walk by sight, you walk by faith. That when you know God’s promises, you live like God’s promises are certainly going to come, not in doubt. So,to set an example of faith is to walk on the basis of God’s word even when you have no physical evidence of what will happen. You are willing to trust him. If God says you can’t lie, then you don’t lie despite the risk you are taking in the process that could lead you even to death. You trust in God, you have faith in God. That way , you are setting an example! Living by faith, not by sight means you do things on the basis of God’s word, on the basis of what God has said even when he has not given you any basis other than his word to walk in that direction or walk in that way.

That way , if you are going to be somebody who impacts your church, it will be important that you set an example in the way you trust God, in faith. When you set an example in faith, it will mean you trust in God, but you also can be one who can be trusted! This is because you are the kind of a person who keeps your word, you are a man of faith. That will be something that will be important for any leader.

You set an example in faith. Sometimes we become so earthly minded, we have no heavenly good, because you can’t see heaven, you can’t see the spirit, you can’t see God, so therefore you have come to where you just talk practical things; pragmatism. Then you cannot be a man of faith. A man of faith knows what God has said is the substance of things hoped for. Yes faith is the substance of things hoped for as Hebrews 11 says. So, instead of just telling people to have faith, the word of God is telling you, you yourself should set example.

Then finally Paul says, you set an example in purity. That talks about holiness. It talks about no immorality of any nature. It talks about life of integrity, life of ethics. That’s what he means by purity. If you are going to set an example, people cannot doubt you because of your purity of mind, and purity of behavior, and purity of thought.

You know the whole requirement is that you preach by example. I think that’s what I hear Paul telling this young pastor to do.
But the same message is in Mathew 5:13-16, Mathew 18: 6-7, Titus 2:7-8, 1st Peter 2:11-12.It runs through the bible.. 2nd Corinthians 6:3 also talks the same, 2nd Corinthians 8:20, 2nd Corinthians 8:21, 1st Corinthians 8:9-13, 1st Corinthians 10:28-33. So all talking about the importance of setting an example,

That also comes out in Romans 2:21-24, Romans 12:17, Romans 16:17. We must know the importance of living our lives as examples is a requirement also from the rest of the bible.

So, if you are really going to honor God, it will be important that we set an example by the way we live our lives first ourselves, and then the way we exhibit it to others as they watch. Setting an example is what the Lord wants us to do.
So, this is what verse 8 is saying that deserves full acceptance, which statement ? That godliness has value, spiritual exercise has value, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.
