One of the questions that are searched by many businesses on Google is how to market your business online.

First, you need an online platform. This could be one, 2, or all of the following:

  • Website
  • Mobile App
  • Social Media Accounts
  • Youtube account
  • Profile in an online directory or online shop.

Having any or all of the above in itself is marketing your business online.

My advice is to have your own website because this will be like living in your own house from which you cannot be evicted.

Businesses/brands and personalities have had their social media accounts closed due to violations of rules, or malicious reporting from competitors, or maybe even the reporting could have been deserved.

Once you develop or obtain your website, the next thing is to plan for marketing in terms of budget, content, and time.

Your website is your online sales and marketing tool. Use it to create the need for your products or services. It should answer the questions: why the product or service, why buy from your company and why buy now. With effective use of landing pages (10 steps that create a landing page that converts), product pages, about and contact pages, as well as providing good overall user experience, your website can generate sales for your business.

Having a website is not enough, you need to publicize it so that people can know that it exists. A good starting point is the use of Social media, such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube and Pinterest. These offer both free and paid options for marketing your products. Of course, if you have the budget, it is much faster to get your products out there through paid advertising.

Social Media Marketing.

Create a Business Page/Account for your business in the various Social media platforms.

Apart from LinkedIn, most of the time, people go to Social media for entertainment, rather than business. For LinkedIn, you will find a lot of educative content for the professional world, whereas in Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Pinterest, there’s a lot of entertaining content. YouTube is a mix of both entertainment and education.

Try as much as possible to post entertaining or very engaging content, images, and videos on your business social media platforms. Remember, that even though your major goal is to increase your sales, your method is through increasing engagement through comments, sharing of your content, and as many likes and follows.

Ask yourself before posting, if you were an outsider (one of your target market), would you like, share and comment on your own content?

Speaking of a target market, be clear on who you are targeting in terms of their age, likes, challenges, dreams, level of awareness about your product or service. etc. That way, whatever you create for social media should try to answer their questions on what your solution for them is and how you are capable of.

Through sponsored advertising, you can fairly easily target those who are likely to be interested in your product or service.

You can have both free and sponsored traffic from Social Media channels. The most popular social media platforms are Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Youtube Google my Business, Instagram, Pinterest, and others.

How many times should your post on your Social Media Accounts?

This depends on the particular medium, but at worst, let it be as follows:

  • Facebook – daily
  • Instagram – 3 times a day
  • Twitter – 3 times a day
  • Pinterest – 3 times a day
  • Youtube – daily
  • LinkedIn – 3 times a week
  • Google my Business – Once a week

Search Engine Marketing (SEM)

Usually associated with Google marketing. However, there are other search engines that one can also be marketing in.

This is where you create targeted ads which you use the keywords that your customer use when they are looking for your type of products. You can also target specific regions, demographics, and interests. This is the fastest way to drive traffic. It’s also a great way to retarget customers who had already accessed your website before.

Content Marketing

Content marketing usually goes hand in hand with social media marketing. You write articles that are relevant to your service or product, which are useful for your target market, and add them to your website blog. These articles or blog posts can be shared on various social media platforms regularly. Try to produce at least one good article per week. If you don’t have the time or interest in writing, then you can subcontract your articles.

If you are doing your own marketing, the best thing for you to do is to learn one social media platform first until you are very conversant and successful in it. For most b2c businesses, start with Instagram, whereas for b2b you can start with LinkedIn. There are lots of online courses and videos that can guide you on how to market your business using various social media channels.
