What is Search Engine Optimization?

This is where your website appears on search engine results when someone searches using “keywords” relevant to your service or product, without having paid for the results to appear.

Some people think you need to pay Google to have your results appear organically (not the sponsored) on the first page.

But that is not the case. Your website needs optimization for relevant keywords for Google to list on the first search results page.

How do you Optimize?

1. Title Tags

These are the page titles, often added as the name of the article, in WordPress, but you can also use an SEO plugin like Yoast to customize the page title.  They usually appear as the clickable link on the search engine results page. So please ensure your page title is appealing.

If your website is an HTML site, add your Title Tag on the Meta Tag section of your webpage during the design phase.

The trick is to ensure that your title represents the truth of what is on your page. Your title should not, for example, be Tennis Shoes for Sale, whereas your page content is about Blouses for sale.

This is important both for Google bots (which list your site) and the reader. Let the person find what they are looking for when they click on that link. Otherwise, they will “bounce” off by going back or closing your page before even going through it. This will give Google the signal that your webpage is not useful, reducing your high ranking ability.

2. Keywords

You will need to do thorough keyword research, which will advise your title and theme of the articles on your website. These keywords should be in terms of what customers are searching for when they are looking for your type of service or product. The best source for you to research is Google Suggest. Go to Google.com, and start typing in the first few words in the keywords you want to research, and you will see suggestions of search queries.

Second, if you type the complete keywords on the Google search box and hit enter, scroll down to the bottom of the page and you will see suggestions of related topics. All that will give you a good idea of the keywords you should think of using.

Third, there’s a very useful site known as answerthepublic.com. Again type in your search query, and this will give you a very comprehensive list of questions asked about your topic.

Finally, ubersuggest is a tool that is very good for all-rounded keyword research, competitive analysis (you can see which keywords work for your competitors) and a lot of other useful information that can help you create content that will attract your potential audience.

3. Description

They place this description on the meta-tag section of your page. What add as the description is what users usually see as a snippet of your page on Google search results page. Enter something that will attract your customers to read more while making sure that the content they will find on the page is related to the description you have provided.

4. Image Tags

These are on the alt text and description of your image. Ensure you type a relevant keyword that describes the image and the content of the page you are inserting the image in.

5. Website Speed

Website speed is a real challenge, especially for websites that use a lot of dynamic functions, because of the use of many plugins and scripts. If your website loads too slowly, it can affect the time a client stays on your website, and if they give up too fast, your bounce rate will increase. This will signal Google that your website is not relevant and this will negatively affect your ranking.

Get a very good web host, because the speed of their server can affect your website speed.

Second, the website themes and plugins you use should be those that you can update easily, and should not be slow in loading.

Speed up your site through the use of caching plugins on your website.

Use reduced images in size (Maximum 1200px in width). Do not upload an image directly from your camera. These are usually too big and will impact your website speed of loading.

In conclusion, the best key Search Engine Optimization is providing the best user experience for your website visitors. Have relevant, helpful content, which when the user reads, they will find exactly what they are looking for. That will reduce the bounce rate, which will also result in a higher ranking on Google search results pages.
